about

I wrote this song during the long drought, then the floods started, so I almost amended it, but Jeremy said something to me about writing it after 10 years of drought so the song should be what it is. It started as a waltz, which is 3 beats to the bar, but ended up a like a bossa nova, which is 4 beats to the bar, which is good, as I wrote a lot of words and the longer bar gives me a bit more time to sing them. Jeremy plays the old nylon string guitar my brother-in-law rescued from the school he taught at.

lyrics

The Rain
(Bruce Pumpa)

How I love to see the rain
Washing down my window pane
Hear it fall on my roof overhead
As I’m tucked up warm and snug in my bed

How I love to feel the rain
Touch my head and cool my brain
And smell the dust in the air as it settles
And see the raindrops on the petals

(Chorus)
It’s right as rain, it’s like they say
We don’t mind if it rains all day
It can never be over rated
We’re happy as Larry when we’re saturated

How I love to watch the rain
Drip off the trees as I walk to the train
And smell the scent of the lemon scented gum
And hear the power lines starting to hum

How I love to see the rain
When it rains you feel no pain
Cooling drops of aqua pura
Hope it’s raining in Mildura

(Chorus)

(Piano solo)

Rain, rain don’t go away
Kids in their gumboots come out to play
Out in the park they splash in the puddles
While mums and the dads stand watching in huddles

When it rains, and it rains, and it rains, and it pours
When it comes and it falls, and it falls where it falls
Falls on the trees and the watercourses
Waters the paddocks and waters the horses
Waters the lawns and the gardens too
It’s falling for me and it’s falling for you

How I love to see the rain
Like meeting an old friend in the street again
Haloes of raindrops over the mountain
Are looking just like some fabulous fountain
It’s over the hill and into the valley
I feel I could sing and dance like Gene Kelly
Sparkling sheets of precipitation
Gives us a feeling of the greatest elation

How I love to see the rain
Flowers lift their heads and plants grow again
Waterways run and the dams start to fill
And the hard weathered ground get much easier to till

How I love when the rain has been
All around us the air’s fresh and clean
Birds sing like crazy in the top of the trees
And all of the brown starts to turn into green

(Chorus)

(Piano with glockenspiel outro)
