about

This is about taking time for the important things in life. The track starts with a recording of sounds outside Southern Cross Station in Melbourne. When writing it, I wanted to play the song to my piano teacher at my lesson that night, but I needed a third verse. At lunch time, I went out by the Yarra River behind where I worked and wrote the verse inspired by the idea of floating down the river with my loved one. Jeremy P Martin and I put multiple overdubs on the recording. I loved the sound of songs like Always Something There to Remind Me by Dionne Warwick with the arrangements from Burt Bacharach and we went for that big sound with timpani and strings. Also, I was learning about latin percussion and piano so I have included that type of playing in the solos.

lyrics

Walk Don’t Run
(Bruce Pumpa)

Everywhere I go these days we’re all in such a hurry
I wonder what goes on inside to cause us all that worry
Sometimes we lose sight of all the good things that we’ve got
Chasing after empty dreams and things don’t mean a lot

(Chorus)
Walk Don’t Run, I thought I heard you calling
Walk Don’t Run, you know we’ve got all day
Walk Don’t Run, you know that I’m not stalling
Cos when you’re here, I want you to stay

I think it’s time to slow down and take stock of our lives
Make time for friends and loved ones, husbands, daughters, sons and wives
We need to get back to what keeps us going strong
Get back to know the people who’ve been with us all along

(Chorus)

I sat by the riverside and thought I really oughtta
Take more time to come down here and look out on the water
Drifting down upon a dream, just you and me together
Floating down along a stream, on a day that lasts forever

(Chorus x2)
